Planning for All the Expenses Associated with an Adoption
You’ve decided to start or build a family in Texas through adoption, but you’re unsure of exactly what costs are typically involved when adopting a minor child. Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect to pay out of pocket to complete an adoption in Texas.
An Overview of the Costs Involved in a Texas Adoption Proceeding
Because there are so many variables in an adoption proceeding, the specific costs will vary from case to case. For example, you may choose to use an agency to facilitate the adoption, you may work directly with an attorney or you may try to handle most matters on your own.
If you’re working with an agency, you can expect to pay significant fees, but you’ll have most matters handled for you. Those fees can run anywhere from $15,000 to $50,000 or more.
If your adoption is being handled by an attorney, you’ll pay legal fees. Your attorney may have a fixed price for adoption, but will typically bill you at an hourly rate.
Providing Financial Assistance to the Birth Mother
Though not required, financial assistance may become a condition of the adoption, based on your agreement with the birth mother. An agency or attorney can help protect your rights in such matters.
Other Potential Costs
Depending on how your adoption is facilitated and where you go to adopt your child, there may be others expenses:
- Advertising expenses—If you are seeking a potential birth mother on your own, you may need to advertise in the right publications or places
- The adoption home study—With an agency adoption, you will have to complete a home study
- Travel expenses—Currently, less than 3% of all adoptions are international. If you are going to another country, though, you will be expected to cover all your travel expenses. In some instances, you may have to travel to the country more than once and may be there for an extended period of time.
